With increasingly drastic changes in the weather, and possibility of global warming ending all of humanity given our limited adaptation capability, an underground habitat may be an option. We would be having underground cities and homes, just like bunnies! (But we might kill most of them because we are taking up their space.)
This underground city would be approximately 4-5 stories deep, mostly submerged into the ground (some sunlight would be allowed into the city), and essentially like a tunnel with very thick waterproof glass walls to prevent flooding. It is similar to underground malls and subways, except it would be incredibly well-maintained (so it would be immaculate and odorless). This city would have highways, small homes, bright lighting, etc.; everything to make it seem like the world we live now with the following advantages:
(1) Soil provides natural insulation. In the winter, the city would be warmer (because of the heat energy stored during the summer), but in the summer, it would be cooler (after the heat stored in the summer is used up in the winter.) Extra heat can be synthesized within the city. (2) It is very energy-efficient. Research has it that 80% of energy would be conserved. (3) It shields us from cancerous radiation, i.e. when the ozone layer has been all torn up. (4) Bad weather does not concern us anymore. There would be no more hurricanes, snowstorms, rainstorms or tornadoes anymore. (5) If we miss the world above with its nice snow and all, we can always visit.
The replication process comes in at the construction of the underground city. The drilling tools would contain seeds of robots and machinery that would construct the whole city for us. As they drill, they would leave the seed droppings in their appropriate places. Those robots would be kept later on to assist us in maintenance, etc. They can make good companions as well - helping us in cooking and cleaning.
Inspiration was based on earth-sheltered homes (from Environmental Science in high school), shopping malls, subways, and the Japanese animation: Evangelion, which has a city that can turn upside-down.
Anticipating to work with Cecilia Xinning Ye (She would be dealing with the ocean part.)
